Tips for Learning How to Manage your Time More Effectively
Plan Your Day– Do you know where you're headed in life but find it difficult getting there? Maybe all you need is better time management. Managing time requires you to get good at focusing your time and energy on the things that really matter. Start with a plan and set some goals today. Figure out the most important things you need to do and how you can get them done as soon as possible. Give planning and goal setting your full attention. Be sure to write your plan and goals down. Later, if things need to be changed, then go ahead and change them.
Be realistic when planning your day. Do not overload with too many projects that will rob you of your primary focus of managing time. Planning time into your day to sit quietly and reflect on any changes that could help you improve the quality of your day and ultimately your life is good management of time.
Accomplishing your goals is never easy but a workable plan is like a road map. It will show you how to manage your time and get you where you want to go.
Beat Procrastination – Procrastination is delaying something we’d rather not do, usually caused by feeling overwhelmed by the task or not knowing where to begin. Or we may be thinking we don’t have the right resources to get the job done.
Getting through a project is simple if it is something we enjoy. But what if it's not. In creep the thoughts that make us feel we are not in the mood to do it right now, or we tell ourselves we have more than enough time to get the task done and so we tend to procrastinate more than we should.
There are many reasons why we procrastinate. If you think about it procrastination is just a habit. We know, in order to break a bad habit, we must replace it with another good habit. Examination of the excuses we tend to use to keep us from accomplishing our goals is a pretty good habit to keep.
Understand when you start to put things off why you do that. Then decide to take active steps for correction. Anthony Robbins has been quoted to say “a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided”.
As you examine yourself be very careful not to put yourself down. You will gain nothing by telling yourself you are lazy, or stupid, or you aren’t competent enough to do the job. Instead of a putdown, focus your attention on the positive things and how it will make you feel when you get the job done. Be sure to reward yourself in some way when the job is complete.
Remember that procrastination is the worst enemy of effective time management.
Organize your day - To successfully manage your time you must be organized. Begin by organizing your work area. Keep your desk uncluttered except for the things you need for the project at hand. The disorder of a cluttered work area takes up space that could be used for better purposes like managing your time.
Once you learn to stay organized, you will never again ask "where is it?". Don't you agree, that alone will save you much time.
Prioritize - Figure out what time of day you are most productive and are at your best. Are you a morning person? If so this is your peak time to work on your most important projects, urgent or not. Get rid of all distractions that gobble up your valuable time. When you allow distractions to become a priority, you sacrifice time management. Your focus should be on managing time throughout the course of your day. No checking emails or calling friends at peak time so you can really concentrate on those important tasks. Uninterrupted work time is one of your most precious assets when managing time.
Prioritize your projects 1 - 4 using the following formula used by time management coaches.
1 = The task is urgent and important. 2 = It's important but not urgent. 3 = It's urgent but not important. 4 = It's not urgent and not important.
Prioritizing your projects will help you work smarter, not harder and will give you greater return on time.
To be successful you need to know where your time is going. Keeping a time journal is very effective when learning to manage time. Write down everything you do. Monitor and update your journal throughout your day in 15 - 30 minute increments for 3 days to 2 weeks. Do not wait until the end of the day when most likely you will forget what you did. Keeping track of time will help you see where you are wasting it. With a good plan, small manageable goals, organization, and self-discipline to follow your plan you can make the most of your time and free up an extra two hours a day. You deserve it!

Dottie - We must be on the same wave link. My latest hub published a couple of weeks ago was written about Time as well.
Just thinking about not enough time in one day is probably what inspired me to write my article in the first place. As I seem to be overwhelmed these days and catch myself saying there is not enough hours in one day to do everything that I need to do. And of course one thing led to another and off I went thinking about time once again.
Your article is GREAT! I love your tips and suggestions on time management. I will definitely bookmark this page. I used to be one of the most organized people and never had a problem with managing my time. I don't know what happened, but I do know that today things are different and I really need help in managing time so I am looking forward to quite a few of your suggestions.
Thanks so much for a well written hub,
Sage

Hi Dottie,
I'm so glad I found this hub! I really need these ideas. My time really seems to slip away from me, and before I know it the day is over! I read the part about having a daily plan with interest. I used to do that and found it to work well for me. Thanks for the reminder. I will start making a daily plan again, and I will remember to not cram it so full that I can't possibly finish it all. I'm bookmarking this hub to read over and over again. Great job!

Excellent advice. It is so easy to get distracted and stray from your original tasks when working - especially on the computer.
Time management is equally important for all be it student, professional, house wife or a businessman. The tips that you have shared here with us all is great indeed. Thanks for the same!
Thanks for this "timely" hub. I was a focused girl and able to accomplish so many tasks. But ever since marriage I am for ever trying to find time. There are so many sudden unknown challenges that keep coming up on a daily basis that I am always left behind doing catch up. Thumbs up for a great hub.

I'm pretty good at this, but I guess I could do better
thank you, very informative hub!
Dottie another great hub. Time management? whats that? You do as much as you can crammed into a day (even if its got a lot to do with hubs)...Just kidding.
It took a lot of planning to finally get all my timing set up just right. I was used to starting at my tailor shop 5:30am everyday and not quiting till 7:00pm or later and still taking the handsewing home so when I had the shop no more all of a sudden I had all these hours of nothing in front of me...what to do with them? For months I couldn't believe days went by and I had nothing to show for them but I was busy and still no concrete visible results. I was doing everything and nothing. Then I finally realized that I still needed the regiment of work. Now I go out to the barn feed the menagerie then write for 5 hours go back out to the barn and garden for an hour or two. Then I sew, knit or do chores around the house, go feed the menagerie again, hub, watch a bit of TV and do the same thing all over the next day and the next. Time managment is the key as I get a lot done now .
Hope you're well, great hub as always
kindest regards Zsuzsy
Just what I have just needed! Even if I just stayed home, I still need an effective time management, huh tough one especially with hubpages around haha! But I have managed to let it rest for a while. Hurray! I have just cured my HP addiction! lol!
It's a Saturday and I'm planning to do some hubbing and maybe a bit of writing and making sure to have time to rest and play. Come join us Angel Dottie! LOL Hugs...
You hit the nail on the head! Thanks!
Thats awesome. In my case the evil which I fight everyday is 'Procrastination'. Thx very much for an inspirational hub. This came as a reminder to me.
Thumbs up Dottie, I recently had to work on plotting my schedule and made sure I really acted on them. Writing them done is the easy part. It's teh execution that becomes the challenge. I pray you continue your path to peace and joy in knowing you are special and that all is well. Lovelots. Hugs:)
I think the hardest part is not getting side-tracked. I write a list and then find I am doing something not on the list. That's where my time disappears.
Thanks for a good hub.
Hi Angel Dottie, I love your hub. I am reminded to not go astray in the ways of time management: organize, prioritize, stop procrastinating and get some hours for myself. Come to think of it, all these tips was what helped me get through the hubchallenge. (reflective mood...hmmm...thinking of that incident LOL) Thank you for a very helpful hub! Thumbs up sis! :-)
Thanks for these tips and reminder Dottie1. Procastination is usually my problem but I'm getting rid of it (slowly). That's why I appreciate this hub very much.
All the best!
Hi Dottie1 Thank You so much for the work in your hub. I can use the procrastination help tip 4 sure. I always put the toughest task last, then the day and eve are over. Bless you friend
Nice reminders and love those pertinent time quotes. My greatest enemy--filling my time with lots to do and then not knowing what I'm doing. I think that is time-defeating too.
Sometimes, time becomes a conflict when desires take precedence over duty. Case in point--I rather go shopping than slave over an article, especially when it's a piece I rather not work on.
Dottie: These are helpful tips and reminders! My biggest fault is procrastination, but... I have been learning to take on chores and do a different task a few times a week, while attending to our business, or else the house would fall apart as we really are busy everyday, 7 days a week.
By the comments, I see procratination seems to affect many of us. LOL!
Hi Dottie!
Like you have pointed out, procrastination is an enemy and has to be defeated early.
Thanks for the tips! :)
Thanks for sharing these tips and ideas.
