AAA and Some History
The AAA (commonly referred to as Triple A) and a more formal name known as the American Automobile Association was founded in 1902 in Cleveland, Ohio as an answer to lack of roads and highways suitable for automobiles.
Up until 1956, in the United States, AAA was an authorized organization for encouraging and supporting many auto races including the Indianapolis 500. In 1955, after the LeMans disaster, AAA decided that auto racing was distracting the organization from their primary goals and so it was that the United States Automobile Club was formed.
Throughout the next few decades, as the association developed, it expanded its scope of services. The AAA travel road maps were published. Hotel guides and AAA travel publications were printed. A School Safety Patrol Program and Driver Safety Programs were formed. And then in 1947, a separate entity was established. It is known today as the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in which a large volume of studies are conducted that have to do with motorist safety.
Currently, AAA has 46 million members belonging to individual clubs. The AAA clubs primarily provide their members with emergency road AAA travel service including lockouts, winching, tire changes, auto first aid and towing.

Is that where we in the UK get the AA from then? Because they do exactly the same help people whos cars have broken down and stuff. www.excelschoolofmotoring.co.uk
We love to use AAA to travel! Their guidebooks and maps are so helpful, and you can get great deals!
a great hub once again. I will surely sign up as a fan.
AAA is a great tool, it will save a big headache if one is planning to go long trips to new places. We can figure it out ourselves but AAA helps a lot. Google Maps also has become real good.
This is a great hub Dottie, AAA sends me enough customers, however, they are expensive to advertise with!
Happy writing!
Thanks for the information. Is it possible to find such services in Africa? Please let me know.
Dineane- Glad things worked out for you even if it took a little embarrassment (glad it didn't happen in front of the family or they would forever heckle you for it)..hehe
no, CW, the curly bracelet did not work for me...I guess the embarrassment did though! I managed not to lock my keys in the car again (as far as I can remember) without wearing the bracelet.
House keys are small but Car keys!! I guess one can always manage with a little discomfort compared to the inconvenient situation.
Dineane- Now I am sure AAA would feel they have to get couple of extra car keys just in case you might call them again and distribute it to your co-workers if you would have called them for 4th time(or did the "curly bracelet" help to avoid the fourth call?)..LOL
I belonged to the CAA for a year once. The last two cars I've leased came with roadside assistance, so I don't need it.
Great hub, Dottie. Now, I'm going to watch the video, I want a chuckle, too. If there is a man asking for directions then I guess it's something of a historic video.
My husband has been bugging me for a long time to sign back up for AAA. Maybe I'll do that for him for Christmas.
I once had to call them 3 times in 48 hours for locking my keys in the car. So embarrassing! All three times I was with the same co-worker. She ended up giving my one of those curly bracelet things to hold your key chain :-)
Dottie I agree with you on the imprtance of CAA (That what our is here in Canada) a few years back I gave a membership to each of my kids for Christmas. What other gift can give that much piece of mind?
Great hub as always regards Zsuzsy
Hi sis Dottie, we might (family and several aunts and uncles) before the year ends. It's like a reunion thing. But I will spend my christmas in cebu. :)
Hi Dottie :) I was fiddling around with myspace and facebook and saw you here :) That's traveling so early in the morning. hehe Hope you are great and doing well. Any plans of traveling any time soon?
Great hub: you can use your AAA membership if you get to Australia or New Zealand - they are both reciprocal agreements! In fact most of the world is - and we've had our money's worth -they even paid for the tow when we put petrol in the diesel's tank! They don't pay for real remote towing though which can be many of thousands of dollars sow we drove pertty carefully then.
Dottie- During this thanksgiving saw some good bargain deals on GPS. It makes life so much easier compared to a paper printout of mapquest to navigate while actually driving.
SweetiePie- Even I don't enjoy driving so much(just manage to go from point A to point B). In India my brother doesn't ever let me drive the car and I am very happy not to drive in Indian traffic...hehe
I tried for about three years to learn to drive. I was not driving every day of those three years, but I had enough driving experience to know it was not for me. Driving phobias have more to do with anxiety and some people really should not drive. My friend's sister is the same way, she is a professional working woman, but driving is just not her forte. I think Triple AAA and driving is great for most people, but I just have given up. I stopped trying six years ago when I realized I was paying thousands of dollars on driving classes that were just not paying off. Do not mean to sound negative, but my fears of driving are just too great to conquer :).
Hi Sis Dottie, I had to laugh at compu-smart's AAA as batteries...I thought the same too. Hehehe This is good info. But I believe I have to see our local version of this one. :) Great hub Dottie!
Dottie- I have AAA for the last two years and once my colleague last year locked herself out (it wasn't so funny at that time). My another friend was searching for metal coat hangers seems he knows how to do it (but in office who has those) then I used my AAA to get a free key. They came in around 25 minutes and finished the key in less than 10 minutes.
I am pretty bad with directions and take longer time to reach based on paper maps. Now I have a Garmin GPS which is more like a friend talking to me and guiding me...hehe
I am such a bad driver and get scared behind the wheel. Believe me, the drivers of the road are safer without me on it :). I am surprised I never got in an accident in all the times I attempted to drive.
Hi Dottie,
When i first saw this hub title, i thought it was about batteries! We have AAA size ones!!
lmao at the video Why Men Don't Ask For Directions!
Dottie,
Thank you for the good information. ~ eddie
Hi Dottie, you have not been hubbing for a long time ... anyways good to see another hub from you.
An interesting video indeed! I'll never ask for directions again. If I lose my way, I'll just go back home! :)
good informative hub from a expert good to have this for old cars...
I do not drive myself, but my family members all belong to the AAA. My sister was able to get a nice discount on her glasses at Lense Crafter's with my mom's AAA membership, and we always stayed at hotels for discounted prices via this membership. Very informative hub about the AAA, a fixture in Southern California for sure with all the cars we have on the road here.
LOL! The video on why men do not ask for directions caught me by surprise and had me chuckling. LOL!
This is a very, well done hub, Dottie. I can learn from you, as its informative, well written, has videos, pictures, good amount of keyword tags, all perfectly balanced.
good work.....u visited india?
